The sun, with all those planets revolving around it and dependent on it, can still ripen a bunch of grapes as if it had nothing else in the universe to do. To me a lush carpet of pine needles or spongy grass is more welcome than the most luxurious Persian rug. To sit in the shade on a fine day and look upon verdure is the most perfect refreshment. Trees are the earth's endless effort to speak to the listening heaven. Trees go wandering forth in all directions with every wind, going and coming like ourselves, traveling with us around the sun two million miles a day, and through space heaven knows how fast and far! Understanding the laws of nature does not mean that we are immune to their operations.
